The Will County Center for Community Concerns, Midland States Bank and University of St. Francis will be hosting a FREE tax preparation & financial education event on Saturday, February 22 from 10 am to 2 pm in Joliet. We are looking for volunteer tax preparers to assist with this event. Free online training is provided.
Will County Center for Community Concerns is an IRS-certified Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) site that provides tax credit information and free tax preparation assistance to low-income workers in our community so they can receive their full refund at tax time.
Tax preparers will provide free tax help to low-income workers and elderly taxpayers who cannot afford paid professional assistance..
- Attend FREE basic tax law and e-file training OR work independently to complete the required online training modules.
- Successfully pass mandatory tests on standards of conduct, quality requirements, and basic tax law knowledge.
- Conduct intake interviews to clarify financial situation and ensure that all allowable credits are claimed.
- Provide high-quality tax return preparation to all taxpayers. Directly prepare taxpayer's return based on information provided by taxpayer and answer tax-related questions. Contact the IRS VITA support line for assistance when necessary.
- Prepare tax returns using electronic filing software.
- Refer taxpayers with complex returns to the IRS assistance office.
- Maintain confidentiality of taxpayer information.
- Review completed tax returns for accuracy.
- Ensure a copy of completed return is provided to the taxpayer.
- Maintain accurate records of assistance provided.
- Provide information about other programs that taxpayers may be able to utilize.
