Will County Justice Access Corps (WillCoJAC) is an innovative program at the downtown courthouse in Joliet that enhances access to justice for the growing number of self-represented litigants (SRLs) by empowering and training student interns and volunteers to assist them as they navigate the court system on their own. People coming to court without a lawyer often do not know where to go, what to ask for or who to see for documents. They may be confused, intimidated and scared. WillCoJAC members serve as guides to help make the courts more welcoming and less intimidating.
WillCoJAC assistance allows SRLs to accomplish the purpose of their visit more effectively. Members receive thorough training, which includes a review of the various activities in the courthouse, available resources and most importantly, the difference between legal information and legal advice.
Responsibilities include:
- Assisting SRLs in the Self-help Legal Center and other assigned locations within the courthouse by providing legal information and connecting them to available legal aid resources.
- Directing SRLs to the various locations within the courthouse to help them complete the steps necessary to move forward with their legal matters.
- Answering general questions about the legal process and making referrals to legal aid and other services when necessary.
